Base Layers, Semiotics, and Multi-roling
In the RSC adaptation, actors do not leave the stage to do full costume changes. Every ensemble member wears a neutral Base Layer. To multi-role, they add a single, highly symbolic garment in full view of the audience. Use the interactive lab below to practice this Brechtian technique.
The actor starts in their neutral base layer. Click below to watch them instantly snap into a new role on stage.
A simple, uniform costume (like black t-shirts and trousers) worn by all ensemble members. It removes their individual identity until they add a specific character's prop.
Using a single object to represent a much larger concept. A bright red blazer instantly communicates "wealth, power, and Cross status" without needing a full three-piece suit.
When an actor puts on or takes off a garment while the audience is watching. This breaks the fourth wall and supports the fluid, fast-paced nature of Story Theatre.
