The Cyclical Structure

Willy Russell gives away the ending in the very first scene. The play uses a cyclical structure (starting with the dead bodies of the twins) so the audience watches the whole play knowing they cannot escape their fate. This makes the childhood scenes deeply tragic rather than just funny.

The Deal with the Devil (Prologue)

Plot: Mrs Johnstone, overwhelmed by debt and already having multiple children, discovers she is pregnant with twins. Her wealthy, childless employer, Mrs Lyons, manipulates her into swearing on the Bible to give one of the babies away. Mrs Lyons takes Edward, leaving Mickey with his biological mother.

Exam Focus & Directing:
  • Acting: Mrs Johnstone is desperate and easily led. Mrs Lyons uses physical dominance and psychological manipulation.
  • The Narrator: He stalks the stage like a predatory bird, representing fate. He introduces the superstition of "shoes upon the table."
  • Lighting: Often uses stark cross-lighting or spotlights to isolate the two mothers during the oath, casting heavy, ominous shadows.
