Status: High (Moral) | Archetype: The Omniscient Interrogator
He creates an "impression of massiveness, solidity and purpose." He is not aggressive, but unstoppable. He controls time, lighting, and the truth.
Low, grave, and controlled. Uses silence and pauses as a weapon to make the Birlings crumble.
Invades personal space (proxemics). Planted and solid posture—he is the anchor of the scene.
Status: High (Social) -> Low (Moral) | Archetype: The Foolish Father
"Heavy-looking, rather portentous." He represents greed, selfishness, and the refusal of the old generation to learn.
Booming and loud. Fast pace when confident, but stammers and hesitates when his authority is challenged.
"Pigeon-chested." Thumbs in waistcoat. By Act 3, he should appear physically deflated and slumped.
Status: Very High | Archetype: The Ice Queen
"A rather cold woman and her husband's social superior." She represents class cruelty and willful ignorance.
Precise RP accent. Icy and condescending tone. Only loses control with sharp gasps when Eric is revealed.
Rigid spine. Never slouches. Avoids eye contact with the Inspector to show he is "beneath" her.
Status: Low (Child) -> High (Moral) | Archetype: The Reformer
Starts as a naive "pretty girl," but transforms into the play's moral conscience and the Inspector's proxy.
Starts high-pitched and "squeaky." Shifts to a low, firm, and serious tone in Act 3.
Starts clinging to Gerald. Ends standing apart from the family, physically isolated by her new morals.
Status: Low (The Baby) | Archetype: The Lost Boy
"Not quite at ease, half shy, half assertive." Represents a younger generation that is privileged but damaged.
Unpredictable volume. Mumbles, then suddenly shouts. Uses fillers ("Um", "Well") to hide guilt.
Constantly fidgets with tie or cuffs. Shows signs of being "squiffy"—uncoordinated and flushed.
Status: High (Aristocrat) | Archetype: The Charming Denialist
"Well-bred man-about-town." He is charming and polite, but ultimately refuses to join the new generation.
Polished Upper-Class accent. Voice softens when discussing Daisy, showing genuine but fleeting emotion.
Relaxed confidence. Sits with legs crossed. Regains his "strut" immediately when the hoax is revealed.
